How to describe the ring you want

Most people arrive with a picture in their head rather than a specification. That is fine — describe it in plain words and the search will map it onto real settings and stones. The more of the following you include, the closer the match.

Shape. Round, oval, cushion, emerald, pear, marquise. This is the one thing that cannot be changed later, so lead with it if you know it.
Style. Solitaire, halo, three-stone, bezel, east-west. If you do not know the vocabulary, say what you like — “simple, just the stone” or “lots of sparkle around it” works.
Metal. Yellow, white or rose gold, or platinum. Warm metals let you drop a diamond colour grade without anyone noticing.
Budget. Give a range in CAD. It changes the recommendation more than anything else on this list, because it decides whether the centre stone is natural or lab-grown.
Wear. Say if the ring will be on a hand that gardens, lifts or works with tools. That rules the low-profile settings in and the high-set solitaires out.
