How to choose an engagement ring setting

A finished engagement ring is two decisions, not one. The setting is the metal architecture — the band, the basket and the prongs that hold the stone. The diamond is bought separately and set into it. Splitting the two is what lets you move money between them: a simpler setting frees up budget for a larger centre stone, and a lab-grown diamond frees up more still.

Start with the setting style, because it constrains which diamond shapes will fit. A round halo takes a round or cushion centre; a marquise east-west setting takes an elongated shape and nothing else. Every product page lists the shapes and carat range that setting accepts, and the 3D preview renders your actual combination — metal, shape and carat — before you order.

The five setting styles we build

• Solitaire. One centre diamond, nothing competing with it. The four- and six-prong baskets lift the stone so light enters from the sides as well as the table, which is why a solitaire reads brighter than its carat weight suggests.
• Halo. A ring of pavé diamonds around the centre stone. A halo adds roughly half a carat of visual size for a fraction of the price of a larger centre, and it suits round, cushion and oval shapes best.
• Three stone. Past, present and future — a centre diamond flanked by two side stones. Three-stone settings carry more total carat weight than a solitaire at the same centre size, so they photograph well and wear wide.
• Bezel. A metal rim wrapped around the diamond. The lowest-profile and most protective setting we make, which makes it the practical choice for anyone who works with their hands or wears gloves daily.
• East-west. An elongated shape — marquise, oval or emerald — turned horizontally across the finger. Modern, unusual, and it makes a modest carat weight span more of the finger than a north-south setting.

Frequently asked questions

How much should an engagement ring cost?

There is no rule. Our settings start around $1,800 CAD and the diamond is priced separately, so the total is whatever combination you choose. Most customers land between $3,000 and $8,000 CAD by pairing a mid-priced setting with a lab-grown centre stone.

Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?

Yes. A lab-grown diamond is chemically and optically identical to a mined one — same carbon lattice, same hardness, same brilliance. It is graded on the same 4Cs scale and typically costs 60–80% less at the same specification, which is why many customers put the savings into a larger centre stone.

Which diamond shape looks biggest for the carat weight?

Elongated shapes. Oval, marquise and pear spread more surface area across the finger than a round brilliant of the same weight, so a 1.5ct oval reads closer to a 1.75ct round from above.

Can I change the metal after I choose a setting?

Yes — every setting is available in 14K and 18K white, yellow and rose gold, and in platinum. Switch metals on the product page and the 3D preview updates before you commit.

How long does a made-to-order ring take?

Rings are made to order once you confirm the setting, diamond and finger size. Settings marked Quick Ship are held in stock and set faster; everything else is built from scratch.
