East West Engagement Ring Settings: A Jeweller's Take
East west engagement ring settings rotate the stone across the finger. Which shapes suit it, how it wears, what it costs in CAD, and when to skip it.
An east-west setting takes an elongated diamond and turns it 90 degrees, so the long axis of the stone runs across your finger instead of up and down it. The stone costs the same, the metal costs the same, and the setting itself is usually within a few dollars of the north-south version. What changes is how wide the ring reads on the hand, how low it sits, and which shapes actually look right that way.
What changes when you turn the stone
Three things, in order of how much they matter.
The first is proportion. A 1.50 ct oval cut to a 1.45 length-to-width ratio measures roughly 9.0 x 6.2 mm. Set the traditional way, it covers about 9 mm of finger length and looks slim. Turn it sideways and it covers 6.2 mm of length and 9 mm across. The ring stops lengthening the finger and starts filling it. Some people want exactly that. Others try it on and find the effect shortens a short finger.
The second is height. Because the basket now sits crosswise on the shank, most east-west settings can be built a little lower without the stone's ends fouling the band. A lower centre of gravity means the ring spins less over the course of a day. That is a small practical gain, but it is real.
The third is where the prongs land. On a north-south oval the two tip prongs sit at the top and bottom of the ring, out of the way. Turn it sideways and those prongs now sit at the edges of the setting closest to your index and middle fingers. On a narrow hand with fingers that sit tightly together, you will feel them.
Which diamond shapes suit it
Only shapes with a clear long and short axis have anything to gain here. Below are the ones worth considering, with the ratios that tend to look balanced sideways.

Marquise deserves a warning. A 2.00 ct marquise at a 2.0 ratio measures about 13 x 6.5 mm. A size 5 finger is roughly 15.5 mm across at the base of the shank. Thirteen millimetres of that is a lot of coverage, and on smaller hands the points will touch the neighbouring fingers when you close your hand. It photographs beautifully and it is the version most likely to come back for a reset.
Round is the wrong stone for this
A round has no long axis, so rotating it changes nothing. If you have seen a round described as east-west, what you are looking at is a horizontal bezel, a bar setting, or an east-west band with a round centre. Those are legitimate designs. Just do not accept a price premium for an orientation that does not exist.
How it actually wears
- Knuckle clearance is better. The stone no longer extends toward your knuckle, so the ring is less likely to catch as you make a fist.
- The band gap is worse. A sideways oval or emerald leaves the shank exposed at the top and bottom of the setting, which means a straight wedding band often sits flush without notching. That is a genuine advantage over most north-south ovals.
- The tips are the exposed part. On a marquise or pear, the point now sits where your fingers rub together. Ask for a V-prong or a small bezel rail over the tip. This is not optional on a marquise.
- Hair and knits. Prongs on the sides of the ring snag differently from prongs on the ends. Most people adapt within a fortnight, but if you work with fabric or wear gloves daily, a bezel or half-bezel version is worth the small extra cost.
- It photographs wider than it looks. Phone cameras shot from above exaggerate the width. Judge it on your own hand at arm's length, not in a photo.
Choosing the stone, in order
- Fix the ratio before the carat weight. Decide whether you want the soft look of a 1.40 oval or the long bar of a 1.55. Ratio drives the whole design.
- Check the millimetres against your finger. Measure the width of your finger at the base with a ruler. Keep the stone's long measurement under about 60 per cent of that number and the ring will sit comfortably. Above 75 per cent, expect contact with neighbouring fingers.
- Watch the video, not the certificate. Bowties in ovals and windows in emerald cuts sit across the middle of the stone. Turned sideways, a bowtie runs up and down the finger where it is more noticeable. A grading report will not tell you this; a 360 degree video will.
- Confirm the setting is built for your ratio. Baskets are cut to a millimetre range. A basket made for a 9.0 x 6.2 mm oval will not hold an 8.2 x 6.5 mm one properly, no matter how close the carat weight looks.
- Preview it before you commit. Pick your engagement ring settings and your stone from the loose diamond search, then look at the pair together in 3D. Orientation is the one thing that is genuinely hard to picture from a description.
Where the money should and should not go
Do not pay a premium for the word east-west. It is an orientation of the same basket, made with the same labour, and any store charging meaningfully more for it is charging for the trend.
Where the money does earn its keep:
- Elongated stones are often better value. Demand for ovals clusters around 1.35 to 1.45, so stones above 1.50 frequently price lower per carat. If you want the long look anyway, you are buying in the quiet part of the market.
- Tip protection on pointed shapes. A V-prong or bezel rail adds a modest amount to the setting and prevents the single most common repair on marquise and pear rings.
- Cut quality over carat weight. A well-cut 1.30 ct oval will out-sparkle a dull 1.60 ct one, and east-west orientation makes a dead centre more obvious, not less.
Where it is not worth it: platinum purely for strength on a sideways setting. The metal is under no more stress than usual here, so choose platinum for its colour and low maintenance if you like it, not out of caution. Same with clarity. On an oval or radiant you will not see the difference between VS2 and VVS1 at any orientation, and the money is better spent on the ratio you actually want.
What to do next
Start with the stone, since the ratio decides everything else.
