How Big Is a Carat? Millimetres, Not Just Weight
How big is a carat, really? A carat is 200 mg of weight, not a width. Here is what one carat measures in millimetres by shape, and what changes the look.
A carat is a unit of weight, not width: 200 milligrams, or one fifth of a gram. In a well cut round brilliant, that weight usually works out to about 6.4 mm across the top, roughly the width of a pencil eraser. Two stones that both weigh exactly 1.00 ct can still look like different sizes on a hand, and the reason is shape and cut, not the number on the certificate.
What a carat actually is
The metric carat is fixed by law, not by trade custom. Canada's Weights and Measures Act lists it in Schedule II under the measurement of the mass or weight of precious stones and gem stones, with one entry: "carat — 200 milligrams". That is 0.0002 kg, and it is the same carat used by every grading laboratory.
Laboratories describe it the same way. HRD Antwerp states in its FAQ that "One carat is equivalent to 200 milligrams or 100 points," and that at HRD "the weight of a diamond is measured up to 1/1,00,000 of a gram," which is why report weights are quoted to two decimals with confidence rather than rounded off casually.
The point system follows from that: 100 points to a carat, so a 0.25 ct stone is a twenty-five pointer. In the United States, how that gets written on a tag is regulated. The FTC Jewelry Guides, 16 CFR § 23.18(b) in the 2023 CFR edition, say it is "unfair or deceptive to use the word 'point' or any abbreviation in any representation, advertising, marking, or labeling to describe the weight of a diamond, unless the weight is also stated as decimal parts of a carat (e.g., 25 points or .25 carat)." Section 23.18(c) adds that a weight stated to one decimal place should be accurate to the second, so ".5 carat" should mean a stone between .495 and .504 ct. Those are American guides rather than Canadian law, but they describe the convention any careful seller on either side of the border already follows, and they are a good test of a listing: a stone advertised as "half carat" with no exact weight anywhere is a stone whose real weight you should ask for.
How wide is one carat, in millimetres
Diameter is what your eye actually reads. These are the figures we see across our own round brilliant stock, and they move by about a tenth of a millimetre either way depending on depth and girdle thickness.

Why doubling the weight does not double the look
Weight follows volume, and volume follows the cube of the width. Going from 1.00 ct to 2.00 ct doubles the mass but adds only about 26% to the diameter, from roughly 6.4 mm to roughly 8.1 mm. Face-up, the stone covers about 60% more finger, not twice as much. That is the single most useful piece of arithmetic in this whole subject, and it explains why the jump from 0.90 ct to 1.00 ct is invisible while the price is not.
Shape changes the size you see
At an identical weight, shapes spread differently. Elongated cuts put more of their mass into length and less into depth, so they read larger. Approximate face-up dimensions for a 1.00 ct stone, again from our own stock:
- Round brilliant: about 6.4 mm across. The benchmark.
- Oval: about 7.7 x 5.7 mm. Reads noticeably larger than a round of the same weight because of the length.
- Marquise: about 10.0 x 5.0 mm. The most spread per carat of any common shape.
- Pear: about 8.0 x 5.3 mm.
- Emerald: about 7.0 x 5.0 mm. Long, but the step cut face is calmer, so it looks large without looking bright.
- Cushion: about 5.8 x 5.8 mm. Often looks smaller than its weight suggests, because cushions tend to be cut deep.
- Princess: about 5.5 mm square, with a 7.8 mm diagonal. The smallest face-up spread of the group.
If maximum apparent size per dollar is the goal, an oval or a marquise gets you there. If you want the look of a round, buy a round: an oval will not read as a round no matter how well it is cut. You can filter by shape and by exact millimetre measurements in our loose diamond search.
Cut proportions: where the weight hides
The Natural Diamond Council's carat guide, read in August 2026, puts it plainly: "this measurement does not necessarily indicate a diamond's size," and "a diamond with an excellent cut grade can appear visually larger than one of the same weight with inferior proportions."
In practice, weight goes missing in three places: a deep pavilion, a thick girdle, and a small table. A 1.00 ct round cut to 66% depth can measure 6.1 mm while a well proportioned one measures 6.5 mm. You paid for the same carat and lost about 12% of the face-up area, plus some brightness. This is the one place where the expensive option earns its money. Cut grade is not a luxury upgrade; it is the difference between the weight showing and the weight hiding.
The reverse trade also exists. Stones cut very shallow spread wide and can look big for the weight while going dark in the centre. On a report, watch the millimetre measurements and the depth percentage together, not the carat alone.
Magic sizes, and where the money stops working
The Natural Diamond Council guide notes that diamonds are priced in weight brackets around thresholds such as 0.50 and 1.00 carat. That is real, and it is where a buyer can save money without giving anything up visually.
- Decide the millimetre width you want, not the carat number. Measure a stone you already like, or hold a ruler against your finger.
- Convert that to a target weight range using the table above, then widen the range by about 10% on the low side.
- Search just under the round numbers. A 0.92 ct sits at about 6.2 mm against a 1.00 ct at 6.4 mm, a difference of two tenths of a millimetre that nobody has ever noticed across a dinner table.
- Spend the difference on cut grade first, then on colour or clarity if it matters to you.
- Check the actual measurements on the report before you commit, since two stones with the same weight can differ by 0.3 mm.
Where extra money is genuinely wasted: buying up to a round number for the number's sake, paying a premium for a deep stone that measures small, and chasing flawless clarity in a shape that hides inclusions anyway. Where it is not wasted: cut, and a setting that fits the stone properly.
The finger and the setting change everything
A 6.4 mm stone on a size 4 finger looks substantial. The same stone on a size 9 looks modest, because your eye compares the stone to the width of the finger beside it. Nothing about the diamond changed.
Setting choices shift apparent size as well. A thin band makes a stone look larger by contrast, a halo adds 1.5 to 2 mm of visual width around the centre, and a bezel can go either way depending on how wide the metal rim sits. What to do next
Pick your target width in millimetres first, then let the carat weight fall where it falls.
