Lab Grown vs Natural Diamonds: A Jeweller's Guide
Lab grown vs natural diamonds compared on price, grading, durability and resale, with real CAD figures and honest advice on which to buy for your budget.
Lab grown and natural diamonds are the same material. Same carbon, same crystal structure, same hardness, same way of bending light. The difference is where the crystal started and what it costs, and the cost difference is large enough that it decides the ring for most people: a lab grown stone of the same size and quality usually runs between a tenth and a fifth of the natural price.
Everything else is detail. Useful detail, but detail.
What actually differs between them
How they're grown
A natural diamond formed in the mantle over a very long time and came up in a volcanic pipe. A lab grown diamond formed in a machine over a few weeks, by one of two methods:
- HPHT (high pressure, high temperature) squeezes carbon around a seed crystal in conditions that copy the mantle. It tends to produce stones that need less post-growth treatment and often shows a slightly warmer body colour.
- CVD (chemical vapour deposition) grows the crystal layer by layer from carbon-rich gas in a vacuum chamber. Most CVD material is treated with heat afterwards to improve colour. This is standard practice and it is stable, not something that fades.
Neither method makes a "fake" stone, and neither makes a fragile one. A grading lab can tell them apart from natural material using growth-pattern and fluorescence equipment, and reputable lab grown stones carry a laser inscription on the girdle. You cannot tell by eye, and neither can your jeweller with a loupe.
What you can see and feel
Nothing. Same refractive index, same dispersion, same 10 on the Mohs scale. Both chip in the same places for the same reason, usually a knock on an exposed girdle or a thin point on a pear or marquise. Origin has no effect on durability. The setting does: a bezel or half-bezel protects a point far better than four thin prongs, which matters more if you work with your hands.
The price gap, in numbers
Here are indicative CAD bands for loose round brilliants, G colour, VS2 clarity, excellent cut, as we generally see them in mid-2026. Treat them as a sense of scale, not a quote, and check live loose diamond search for what's actually available today.

Two things worth knowing about that table. First, the multiple widens as the stone gets bigger, because natural diamonds get rarer with size and lab grown ones mostly get slower to grow. Second, lab grown prices have fallen every year for roughly a decade as production capacity has expanded, and there is no sign of that stopping. Natural prices have been soft but nothing like that.
The practical consequence: whatever you pay for a lab grown stone today, an equivalent one will very likely cost less in five years. Buy it because you want to wear it, not because you expect it to hold a number.
Where to spend, and where not to, on a lab grown stone
This is where most people waste money. The old buying logic was built around scarcity, and scarcity is exactly what lab grown removes.
Since a D colour, internally flawless lab grown stone costs only a little more than a G VS2, buyers reach for the top grades out of habit. There is no visual payoff. A well-cut G is colourless to the eye in a white metal setting. VS2 is eye-clean by definition, and most SI1 stones are too once you check where the inclusions sit. Paying a premium for IF over VS2 in a lab grown diamond is buying a line on a certificate.
Spend on cut instead. Cut is the only grade you can actually see across the room, and it is the one thing that separates a stone that looks alive from one that looks like glass. For rounds, hold out for Excellent or Ideal cut with Excellent polish and symmetry. For fancy shapes, which have no standardised cut grade, look at the proportions and the actual photo or video: a 70% depth cushion will look small and dark for its weight.
The other good place to put the savings is the setting and the metal, since that is what you touch every day. Have a look at what's available in engagement ring settings before you fix the stone budget, because a heavier platinum band or a more detailed setting changes the total more than a colour grade does.
When a natural diamond is the right call
There are honest reasons to choose one, and pretending otherwise is bad advice.
Some people want the stone to have a history, and a billion years of geology is a real thing that a chamber in a factory does not replicate. Some want a piece intended as an heirloom and feel the natural origin belongs to that story. Some are buying for a partner who has already said clearly which one they want, and that answer settles it.
What is not a good reason is investment. Retail diamonds of either kind lose most of their value the moment they leave the store, because you paid retail and any buyer will offer wholesale. Natural stones at least have a functioning secondhand market, so you might recover 20% to 40% of what you paid. Lab grown resale is close to nothing, since a buyer can get a new one cheaply. Neither is an asset. Budget accordingly.
Certificates, grading and the fine print
Buy the report, not the seller's description.
IGI grades the large majority of lab grown stones; GIA grades most natural ones and now issues lab grown reports too. Both are credible. The catch is that grading standards are not perfectly aligned between labs, and IGI reports on lab grown material tend to run about a grade softer than GIA on natural material for colour and clarity. So an IGI F VS1 lab grown stone is not strictly interchangeable with a GIA F VS1 natural stone on paper. Compare stones graded by the same lab where you can.
Check that the report says "laboratory-grown" plainly, that the inscription number on the girdle matches, and that the measurements on the report match the stone you're being shown. Any seller who will not give you the full report before purchase is telling you something.
Choosing yours, step by step
- Set the total budget first, including the setting, sizing and taxes. Not the stone budget. The stone budget is what's left over.
- Decide the size that matters. If a 2 ct centre is the point, lab grown is very likely your answer. If size is flexible, natural stays on the table.
- Pick origin and commit. Do not price a natural stone, get sticker shock, and buy a lab grown one you never wanted. That order of operations makes people unhappy.
- Buy cut, then shape, then carat, then colour, then clarity. In that order, every time.
- Look at the actual stone. Video, photo, plotted inclusion map. Grades narrow the field; your eyes pick the winner.
- See it assembled before you order. Pairing a setting with a stone on paper is guesswork, and a 1.2 ct oval reads very differently in a solitaire than in a halo.
What to do next
Start with the setting, since it constrains the shapes and carat range that will look right, then match a stone to it. When you have both, finish the ring with metal, size and engraving and preview the whole thing in 3D before you commit to anything.
