What Is a Bow Tie in an Oval Diamond? How to Judge It

What is a bow tie in an oval diamond, what causes the dark band across the centre, why grading reports skip it, and how to judge one on video.

A bow tie is the dark band that runs across the width of an oval diamond, roughly at its waist, shaped like two triangles meeting in the middle. It is a shadow, not an inclusion and not a flaw in the crystal, and every oval has one to some degree because of the way an elongated stone is faceted. What varies is whether it is a faint grey that comes and goes as the hand moves, or a solid black stripe that sits there in every light.

What is actually making the shadow

An oval is a round brilliant stretched along one axis. When you stretch the outline, the pavilion facets near the middle of the long axis end up at angles that no longer send light back up through the table. Instead of returning light to your eye, that zone returns whatever is above the stone, which at close range is mostly your own head and shoulders. The Natural Diamond Council describes the mechanism as light escaping "through the lower pavilion facets rather than reflecting back upward, creating areas of contrast", in its guide to the bow tie effect.

This is why a bow tie behaves differently from an inclusion. Move the stone and the shadow moves with the light source. A crystal or feather stays put. It is also why photographs taken on a light box under diffuse studio lighting can hide a bow tie almost completely: remove the observer and the shadow has nothing to reflect.

Rounds do not show it in any meaningful way. Ovals, pears, marquises and hearts do, because all four are elongated.

What the grading laboratories say, and what they leave out

This is the part most buyers get wrong. There is no bow-tie grade on a diamond report.

HRD Antwerp does name the effect. In its Cut Grade: Proportions, Polish, Symmetry brochure (2022), it defines it plainly: "Bow tie effect: Through the crown side, two dark zones in the shape of a bow tie can be seen." Note where HRD files it. The bow tie sits under symmetry, in a list headed not measurable deviations — visual observations, sitting apart from the measured deviations like unroundness or table off-centre that carry numeric tolerances. HRD publishes exact figures for those, down to "< 1.0 %" for an Excellent table out of centre, but for the bow tie it publishes nothing, because there is nothing to measure. The Natural Diamond Council puts the consumer version of this more bluntly, stating that the bow tie effect "is not assessed in the 4Cs and will not appear anywhere on a GIA or other grading report."

So the honest position is this: the labs know about it, at least one of them defines it, and none of them will tell you how bad yours is. Two ovals with identical carat, colour, clarity, polish and symmetry on paper can look entirely different across a table. That gap is yours to close by looking, and nobody else's.

Reading severity from a 360 video

You will almost certainly buy from video rather than in a shop, so learn to read one properly. This takes about two minutes per stone.

  1. Play the video at full screen size, not the thumbnail. A bow tie is a mid-tone problem and it disappears at 200 pixels wide.
  2. Pause the rotation at four or five points and look only at the centre third of the stone. Ignore the ends; that is not where the bow tie lives.
  3. Ask one question at each stop: does the dark zone change shape and brightness, or is it the same silhouette every time? Movement is normal and desirable. Stillness is the warning sign.
  4. Look at the darkest single frame, not the average. That frame is roughly what you will see in a restaurant or an office corridor, which is where the ring actually lives.
  5. Compare at least three ovals of similar weight side by side in separate tabs. A bow tie is only judgeable relative to other bow ties, and one stone on its own tells you nothing.
  6. If the seller only offers a still image on white, treat that as a missing piece of information rather than a good sign.

A rough severity scale you can actually use

No lab publishes tiers for this, so what follows is our own working scale from handling stones, not a graded standard. It is still more useful than pretending the effect is binary.

The first row is worth dwelling on. A faint bow tie is not a defect to be eliminated. The Natural Diamond Council notes that a subtle one can "enhance the elongated silhouette" and that acceptability is subjective. An oval with zero contrast in the middle tends to look flat and glassy. Contrast is part of how a brilliant cut reads as lively.

Proportions that correlate, and the limits of that

You cannot predict a bow tie from a report, but some numbers shift the odds. These are tendencies, not rules, and any one of them can be wrong on any given stone:

  • Length-to-width ratio. More elongation generally means more shadow. The Natural Diamond Council cites GIA as putting the most popular ratio for ovals at 1.7:1 while noting such stones are rarely cut, with typical ratios landing between 1.3:1 and 1.5:1. In practice the 1.35 to 1.45 band gives you an oval that still reads as an oval without pushing the shadow.
  • Total depth. Deep ovals hide weight below the girdle and tend to darken the centre. Very shallow ones window instead, which is a different but equally visible problem.
  • Table size. A large table gives the shadow more open area to sit in, so it reads bigger even when the physical dark zone is the same.
  • Symmetry grade. Excellent or Very Good symmetry does not promise a faint bow tie, but Good or Fair symmetry on an oval is a reasonable reason to skip the stone without looking further.

Where the evidence genuinely runs out: nobody publishes a validated proportion set for ovals the way the round brilliant has one. Cutters optimise for yield from the rough as much as for appearance, and two stones with identical measurements can be faceted differently underneath. Anyone quoting you exact "ideal" oval angles is offering an opinion, not a standard.

Does a bow tie change what you pay

Yes, but less predictably than colour or clarity. A visible bow tie is priced by the seller's judgement rather than by a grade, which means the discount is inconsistent across the market. It also means a stone with a mild bow tie and otherwise good numbers can be genuine value, because the report shows nothing that would justify the lower ask.

One thing to keep in mind on a Canadian budget: loose diamonds are traded in US dollars, so the CAD tag on any stone moves with the exchange rate as well as with the stone. The Bank of Canada's daily exchange rate put the US dollar at 1.3865 Canadian on 17 August 2026. A quote you were given weeks ago is not a quote today.

Where the expensive option is not worth it: paying a premium for a "bow-tie-free" oval is usually paying for marketing. The stones sold that way are typically shorter, closer to 1.30, which solves the shadow by giving up the elongated look you wanted in the first place. If you want a long oval, accept a mild bow tie and choose the best one you can see.

What to do next

Pick the outline you want first, then shortlist three or four candidates in the loose diamond search at the same weight and ratio, and watch each video through a full rotation before you look at any price. Rank them on how the centre behaves, then let colour and clarity break the tie. Once a stone is chosen, drop it into a setting and preview the pair in 3D before committing; an oval in a four-claw solitaire and the same oval in a halo read very differently, and a halo does mask a mild bow tie by adding brightness around the perimeter.
