14k vs 18k Gold Tennis Bracelet: Links, Wear, Cost
A jeweller's comparison of a 14k vs 18k gold tennis bracelet: gold content, hardness at the links and solder joints, Canadian marking rules, and real cost.
For a diamond line bracelet, 14K is the sensible default and 18K is an upgrade you buy for colour, not for strength. The two alloys differ by about 17 percentage points of fine gold, 58.3% against 75%, and on a piece where the diamonds carry most of the price, that gap is usually a small share of the total. The decision that matters more on a bracelet is not the karat number at all. It is the clasp, the solder joints, and how the links are finished.
What the karat number actually means
Karat is a fraction of 24. Fourteen parts gold out of twenty-four is 58.3% gold by weight; eighteen parts is 75%. Everything else in the alloy is copper, silver, zinc, palladium or nickel, chosen to set the colour and the working properties.
Canada regulates how that gets stamped. The Competition Bureau's Guide to the Precious Metals Marking Act and Regulations states that "'karat', 'carat', 'Karat', 'Carat', 'Kt.', 'Ct.', 'K' or 'C' or a decimal designation may be used to express the quality of gold of an article having a minimum quality of 9 K or higher," and that "Gold articles having a quality of 10 K, 14 K, 18 K may alternatively be marked as .417, .583, .750 respectively." The Bureau adds that it will also accept 417, 583 and 750 without the decimal point.
Two things surprise most buyers. First, marking is optional: the Bureau's precious metals marking page says plainly that "It is not mandatory to apply a quality mark to items made of precious metals (gold, silver, platinum, or palladium)." An unstamped bracelet is not automatically suspect. Second, if a quality mark is applied, it does not travel alone. Section 4(3) of the Precious Metals Marking Act requires that a registered trademark be applied alongside it. A karat stamp with no maker's mark next to it is the thing worth asking about.
Where a bracelet is different from a ring
A ring is one piece of metal. A tennis bracelet is thirty to sixty small castings joined by pins or links, with a box clasp and usually a safety catch, and every one of those joints is a place where metal has been soldered.
That changes what karat is doing for you. On a ring shank, hardness resists the scuffing you get from a desk edge or a steering wheel. On a bracelet, the wear is concentrated: the link seats rub against each other every time your wrist moves, and the clasp tongue flexes each time it opens. Over ten years, a bracelet does not thin evenly the way a band does. It develops play at the joints.
Lower karat alloys are generally the stiffer of the two, because there is more copper and silver and less of the softest constituent. But I would not push that argument too hard, because karat alone does not determine hardness. A palladium-alloyed 18K white can be firmer in the hand than a soft, silver-heavy 14K yellow. If durability at the links is your priority, the specific alloy and how well the links are finished matter as much as the number stamped on the clasp.
The solder allowance, which actually matters here
Because a bracelet is full of solder, the marking rules build in room for it. Section 13(1) of the Precious Metals Marking Regulations sets the permitted shortfall from the marked fineness at three parts by weight in every 1,000 for an article without solder, seven parts per 1,000 where solder is used, and fifteen parts per 1,000 for white gold of 18 karats and finer.
Read that carefully, because it is a legal marking tolerance and not a quality grade. It means a bracelet lawfully stamped 18K may assay slightly under 750 once the solder is averaged in, and the allowance is widest exactly where people pay the most: 18K white. It is not a scandal, it is how soldered assemblies are made. But it is a reason not to treat the difference between .750 and .583 as a precise measurement of what is on your wrist.
The cost difference, worked out
Do this with your own quote rather than a rule of thumb. Ask for the finished metal weight in grams, then apply the karat fractions.
If a bracelet carries 12 grams of metal, the 14K version holds about 7.0 grams of fine gold and the 18K version about 9.0 grams. The difference is roughly 2 grams, or about 0.064 troy ounces.
What those 2 grams cost depends on the day. Natural Resources Canada's gold facts page, last updated 27 February 2026, reports that gold averaged US$2,387 per troy ounce in 2024, up from US$1,942 in 2023, and notes prices ranging "from as low as US$1,068 per troy ounce in December 2015 to a peak of US$2,690 per troy ounce in December 2024." At that 2024 average, 2 grams of fine gold was worth roughly US$150 in raw metal. Gold has moved since, and the trade prices off a daily benchmark; the LBMA notes its gold price benchmark is "administered by ICE Benchmark Administration Limited (IBA)." Get the number for the day you order rather than carrying one from an article.
Fabrication, casting loss and margin sit on top of the raw metal, so the real upcharge on your invoice will be larger than the bullion arithmetic. It is still, on most diamond bracelets, a modest line next to the stones.

Colour: where you see it and where you do not
In yellow, the difference is real. Eighteen karat yellow reads warmer and deeper, and against a line of near-colourless diamonds that warmth is visible if you set the two bracelets side by side. On its own, on a wrist, in a restaurant, most people will not name which one they are looking at.
In white, there is no visible difference at all, because both are rhodium plated. You are paying more gold to sit underneath a plating layer that determines everything you actually see, and that plating will wear at the clasp and the underside of the links on both. If white is the plan, this is the clearest case where the expensive option is not worth it.
In rose, colour comes from copper content rather than karat, so a 14K rose can easily be pinker than an 18K rose. Judge rose by sample, not by number.
Where 18K genuinely earns its price
- You want a saturated yellow and you have compared the two in person, not on a screen.
- The bracelet needs to sit next to existing 18K pieces, and a mismatch in warmth would bother you.
- You have a known sensitivity to nickel and your jeweller can confirm the 18K option is a palladium-based white rather than a nickel white. Ask for that in writing; the karat number alone does not tell you.
- Resale or melt value is part of your thinking. The gold content is 29% higher, which is a small but honest argument.
How to decide, in order
- Fix the diamond spec first. Total carat weight and stone quality drive most of the price, so settle that before you argue about metal. Our loose diamond search lets you compare natural and lab-grown at the same specification.
- Choose colour family: yellow, white or rose. This is the decision your eye actually notices.
- If white, take 14K and put the savings into stones. If yellow, look at both in daylight before deciding.
- Ask for the finished gram weight and the karat upcharge as a separate line. Compare it against the diamond budget, not against nothing.
- Ask what the clasp is: box clasp, figure-eight safety, or both. This is what fails, and it fails regardless of karat.

What the evidence does not settle
Nobody publishes a durability figure for a finished tennis bracelet, and I have not seen one worth quoting. Hardness data exists for specific alloy formulations, not for "14K" as a category, and manufacturers do not usually disclose their exact recipes. What can be said with confidence is the composition, the marking rules and the solder tolerance, all of which are set out in the Canadian regulations above. The claim that 14K "lasts longer" on a bracelet is a reasonable inference from alloy composition, not a measured result, and a well-made 18K bracelet with tight link seats will outlast a poorly finished 14K one.
What to do next
Price the same bracelet twice, once in 14K and once in 18K, with the diamond spec held constant, and look at the two invoices next to each other. If the gap is small enough to ignore and you want yellow, take 18K. If it would cost you a colour grade or a tenth of a carat across the line, take 14K without regret.
