White Gold vs Yellow Gold Tennis Bracelet: Upkeep and Cost

White gold vs yellow gold tennis bracelet: how rhodium plating, alloy choice and diamond colour grade change the upkeep, the look and the price.

At the same karat, white and yellow gold hold the same amount of gold, so the metal itself costs close to the same. The real difference is maintenance and appearance: white gold is almost always plated with rhodium, and that plating wears off a bracelet faster than it does off most rings, while yellow gold never needs plating but makes warm diamonds easier to live with and cool ones slightly harder to show off. Pick based on how much upkeep you want and what colour grade of diamond you are buying, not on price.

What is actually different, and what is not

Karat is a measure of gold content, and it is defined in law. Canada's Precious Metals Marking Regulations (C.R.C., c. 1303) set the minimum quality at 9 karats and permit decimal equivalents, so 10K may be marked .417, 14K .583 and 18K .750. A 14K white gold bracelet and a 14K yellow gold bracelet are both 58.3 per cent gold by weight. Nothing in the marking rules distinguishes the colour.

What differs is the other 40 or 25 per cent. Yellow gold is alloyed mainly with copper and silver, which keeps the warm tone. White gold is the same gold bleached with a whitening metal, usually palladium or nickel, plus zinc and sometimes a little silver. Even then the result is not truly white, so nearly all commercial white gold is finished with a thin rhodium electroplate to give it the bright, cool colour people expect.

That plating is the whole story. Everything else about the two metals is close to identical.

How the metal changes what the diamonds look like

Diamond colour is graded against reference stones, not measured in absolute terms. HRD Antwerp describes it plainly in its 4Cs guidance: "The colour grade is determined by comparison with a series of master stones, the best grade being D." HRD pairs each letter with a European descriptive term, and the pairings are useful when you are choosing metal. H is simply "White". I and J are "Slightly Tinted White". K and L are "Tinted White".

Those descriptions are made under controlled lab conditions with the stone face down against a neutral background. On your wrist, mounted in metal, the background is the metal. Yellow gold puts a warm reflection into every stone, which means the faint tint in an I or J stops registering as a fault and starts reading as consistency. Rhodium-plated white gold does the opposite: it is a cool, neutral background that makes any warmth in the stone slightly more noticeable.

Be careful how much weight you put on this. A tennis bracelet is built from melee, usually somewhere between 0.03 and 0.10 carats per stone. At that size, colour differences that are obvious in a two-carat solitaire are genuinely hard to see, and melee is normally bought and sold by parcel colour range rather than graded stone by stone. The labs also do not agree perfectly with each other, since each maintains its own master set. If someone tells you a G-colour bracelet will look visibly whiter than an H-colour bracelet across a room, they are overselling. Where the difference does show is between grades several steps apart, and mostly in white metal.

Rhodium plating is a consumable, not a finish

This is the part that surprises people. Rhodium plating is a flash layer measured in fractions of a micron. It does not polish back. Once it wears through, the only fix is to strip and replate, and on a bracelet that means dismantling nothing but still handling dozens of links.

A bracelet wears differently from a ring. A ring wears mostly on the underside of the shank. A bracelet slides along the wrist all day and takes contact from several directions:

  • The outer edges of each link, which catch on cuffs and sleeves
  • The underside, which rests against desks, tables and steering wheels
  • The clasp and the safety catch, handled every single time you put it on
  • The hinge points between links, where metal rubs metal continuously
  • The area where it meets a watch, if you wear one on the same wrist

How fast this happens depends entirely on you. Someone who wears a bracelet twice a month may see nothing for years. Someone who wears it daily at a keyboard may see warm patches at the link edges within a year or two. Nobody can give you a reliable number, and any shop that quotes one with confidence is guessing.

Yellow gold has no equivalent failure mode. It scratches, and the scratches accumulate into a soft satin patina, but the colour underneath is the same colour all the way through. You can have it polished when you want it bright again, and polishing removes a little metal each time rather than replacing a coating.

Alloys, nickel and skin

If you or the recipient has ever reacted to costume jewellery or a watch back, ask what the white alloy is before you order. Nickel is the usual culprit, and it is regulated in Europe. Directive 94/27/EC, adopted 30 June 1994, restricts products intended for direct and prolonged skin contact where "the rate of nickel release from the parts of these products coming into direct and prolonged contact with the skin is greater than 0,5 μg/cm²/week". The directive also addresses coated items, requiring that the coating keep release below that limit "for a period of at least two years" of normal use.

Read that second clause again in the context of a rhodium-plated bracelet. A coating that hides a nickel-bearing alloy only protects the skin for as long as the coating survives.

Canada's rules are different in scope. The Precious Metals Marking Act and its regulations govern how the quality of gold, silver, platinum and palladium is described. They do not set a nickel release limit. So a Canadian karat mark tells you the gold content and nothing about what is in the rest of the alloy. Palladium-whitened gold sidesteps the issue, holds a presentable grey colour even unplated, and costs more. Yellow gold sidesteps it too, at no premium.

What the Canadian marks tell you, and what they don't

Three things worth knowing before you inspect a stamp.

  1. Marking is optional. The Competition Bureau's guide to the Act and Regulations states that it is not mandatory to mark or advertise a precious metal article for quality. An unmarked piece is not automatically suspect.
  2. If a quality mark is applied, a trademark must accompany it. Section 4(3) of the Precious Metals Marking Act requires that where a quality mark is applied, "a mark that is a registered trademark" also be applied, with an exception for articles hallmarked under UK law. A karat stamp sitting alone with no maker's mark is worth a question.
  3. White gold gets a wider tolerance. Section 13 of the Regulations allows a shortfall of three parts per 1,000 without solder and seven parts with solder, but for white gold marked 18 karat or higher the tolerance with solder rises to 15 parts per 1,000. The Regulations do not explain why. In practice it reflects how hard white gold solders are to match to the parent alloy.

On cost, the honest answer is that colour is close to a wash. The gold content is identical at a given karat. Palladium-whitened alloys carry a real premium because palladium is a platinum group metal, and Johnson Matthey's 2026 PGM Market Report, published 14 May 2026, noted "dramatic price gains for the platinum group metals (PGMs), with platinum hitting an all-time high in January 2026", while forecasting small surpluses for palladium and rhodium in 2026. Beyond the alloy, the difference is a plating step and its labour. That is not a reason to choose one over the other.

How to choose

Work through it in this order.

  1. Check what metal the wearer already owns. A bracelet that clashes with a daily-wear watch or ring gets left in a drawer.
  2. Decide how much upkeep you accept. If replating every few years sounds irritating, choose yellow gold or ask specifically for a palladium white alloy that is presentable without plating.
  3. Ask about nickel if there is any history of reaction.
  4. Set the diamond colour to the metal. In yellow, I and J are sensible and free up budget for size. In white, hold at H or better.
  5. Choose the karat last. 14K is harder and holds up better on a piece with this many hinge points; 18K gives a richer yellow and is softer.
