Marquise Diamond Engagement Rings: Big Look, Real Care
Marquise diamond engagement rings look larger per carat than any other shape. Here is how bow tie, tip protection and setting choice really work.
A marquise is a long, pointed oval, and it is the shape that buys you the most visible length per carat. A 1.00 carat marquise measures around 10mm from tip to tip, where a 1.00 carat round is about 6.4mm across. That extra 3.5mm of outline is the whole reason people choose it, and the two sharp points are the whole reason it needs a bit more thought than a round.
Why a marquise looks bigger than it actually is
Here is the part most guides skip. The marquise does not have dramatically more surface area than a round of the same weight. Run the numbers and a well cut 1.00 carat marquise covers roughly 33 to 36 square millimetres face up, against about 32 for a round. That is a gain of maybe five to ten percent, not fifty.
What you are actually buying is length. The eye reads a 10mm stone as much larger than a 6.4mm stone even when the areas are close, and because the stone sits along the finger rather than across it, the finger looks longer too. It is a proportion effect, not a size effect, and it works.

Sizes are typical for a well proportioned stone. Two marquises of the same carat weight can differ by a millimetre or more in length depending on how deep they are cut, which is worth checking before you commit.
The bow tie, and how much is acceptable
Every elongated shape has a bow tie, the darker band running across the middle of the stone where your own head and shoulders block light from reaching the pavilion. Marquise shows it more than oval, because the shape is longer and narrower.
A faint bow tie is normal and nobody notices it in daily wear. A hard black bar across a third of the stone is a real fault and it does not go away in different lighting. You cannot see this on a grading report. GIA does not issue an overall cut grade for fancy shapes at all, only polish and symmetry, so the report will happily call a dull marquise "Excellent" polish while saying nothing about how it performs.
The only reliable check is video. Watch the stone rotate under normal room lighting, not just under the bright spot lamps, and look at the centre third. On our loose diamond search every stone has video for exactly this reason.
Ratio: the number that decides how it wears
Length to width ratio is what separates a marquise that looks elegant from one that looks like a splinter or a fat oval.
- 1.75:1 is the short end. Rounder, softer, less finger-lengthening, and the bow tie is usually smaller.
- 1.85 to 2.00:1 is the range most people prefer and where the classic marquise outline sits.
- 2.10:1 and above looks dramatic on a long finger and can look severe on a short one. Very long marquises also tend to have thinner points, which is a durability issue rather than a taste issue.
If your hands are on the smaller side, a 1.80:1 marquise at 0.90ct often sits better than a 2.20:1 at 1.10ct, and costs less. Length is not automatically flattering.
Protecting the points
Two sharp tips are the genuine weakness of this shape. Diamond is hard but not tough, and a point is where a knock concentrates. Chipped marquise tips are one of the more common repairs a jeweller sees.
What to do at the setting stage
- V-prongs at both ends. These cup the tip rather than clamping across it. This is not optional on a marquise, it is the standard fix, and any decent setting for the shape will have them.
- A medium girdle, not extremely thin. Ask what the report says. An "extremely thin" girdle at the points is the profile most likely to chip.
- Six points of contact rather than four. Four-prong marquise settings exist and look clean, but two extra prongs on the sides stop the stone rotating in the head over years of wear.
- A bezel or half bezel if you work with your hands. It covers the tips completely. You lose a little light from the sides and a little apparent size, and you gain a ring you can stop worrying about.
The problem nobody warns you about
A long stone rotating on the finger looks obviously wrong in a way a round never does. If your knuckle is much wider than the base of your finger, the ring will spin and the marquise will end up sitting diagonally. The fix is at the shank, not the head: a slightly heavier band, a sizing bead, or a subtly squared-off inner profile. Sort this out when you specify the band rather than after.
What a marquise costs in CAD
Fancy shapes generally sell for less per carat than rounds, because cutting a round wastes more rough. Marquise sits at the more affordable end of the fancy shapes, alongside pear.
As a rough guide at the time of writing, for a 1.00ct, G colour, VS2 stone with good proportions:
- Natural marquise: roughly $4,000 to $6,000 CAD
- Natural round, same spec: roughly $6,000 to $8,500 CAD
- Lab-grown marquise, same spec: roughly $700 to $1,500 CAD
Lab prices in particular have moved a lot and continue to move, so treat those as orientation rather than quotation. The honest point is that the natural versus lab decision changes your budget by several times over, while the shape decision changes it by perhaps twenty percent.
Where not to spend
On a marquise specifically, paying up for D or E colour is usually wasted money. The shape's long facets and the shadow of the bow tie make small colour differences harder to read, and G or H set in white gold looks white. Clarity is the opposite: VS2 is a sensible floor because the point areas are where an inclusion is both visible and structurally unhelpful. Skip the SI2 bargain if the inclusion sits near a tip.
Bands that work with a marquise
A straight band leaves a visible gap under the points at both ends. Some people like that gap and some find it bothers them daily. The alternatives are a contoured band that curves around the lower point, a chevron band, or simply setting the marquise slightly higher so the band tucks under. There is no correct answer, but decide before the setting is made, because retrofitting a contour to an existing ring means matching a curve to a stone that already exists.
What to do next
Start with the stone, since the marquise you find will dictate the head size.
