Pear Shaped Engagement Ring Guide: Fit, Cost, Care

A jeweller's pear shaped engagement ring guide covering bow-tie, length-to-width ratios, protecting the point, band pairing and honest CAD price ranges.

A pear looks larger than a round of the same carat weight, costs roughly 15-25% less per carat, and has two problems you need to solve before you buy: the bow-tie shadow across the belly, and the point, which is the most chip-prone spot on any common diamond shape. Both are fixable, but only if you know what to look for. This guide covers the numbers that actually matter, what to ignore, and how to set a pear so it survives daily wear.

Why a pear costs less and looks bigger

A pear is a modified brilliant, half round and half marquise. Cutting one wastes less rough than cutting a round, so you pay less per carat. At the same time, the elongated outline spreads more surface across the finger, so a 1.20ct pear typically reads closer to a 1.50ct round when you look down at the hand.

Length-to-width ratio: the number that sets the whole look

Ratio is the pear's most important spec and it never appears in a grading summary as a quality judgement, because it is not one. It is taste. Two people can look at the same stone and disagree, and both are right.

Below about 1.35 a pear starts reading as an oval with a nose. Above 1.75 the tip becomes thin enough that setting choice stops being a preference and becomes a requirement.

Pick your ratio before you shop, then filter to it. Otherwise you will compare a 1.42 against a 1.62 and conclude the cheaper one is "worse", when the real difference is that you prefer one silhouette.

The bow-tie, and how to judge it

Every pear has a bow-tie: a dark band across the widest part of the stone where the facets bounce light back at your own head instead of at your eye. There is no such thing as a pear with zero bow-tie. There are pears where it is faint and moves as your hand moves, and pears where it sits there like a smudge under any light.

You cannot see it in a lab report. GIA and IGI do not grade cut for fancy shapes, so a pear will show polish, symmetry and proportions but no overall cut grade. Depth and table percentages hint at it but do not settle it.

What actually works:

  • Look at the video, not the still photo. Stills are shot in light designed to fill the bow-tie in. Rotate the video and watch whether the dark band shrinks and shifts or stays put.
  • Check depth. Pears deeper than about 68% often hide weight underneath and go dark in the centre. Under 58% and they tend to look flat and glassy.
  • Watch the shoulders. They should be a smooth continuous curve. Flat spots or a squared-off shoulder read as "off" even when a customer cannot name why.
  • Ignore a faint bow-tie entirely. A soft one adds contrast and makes the stone look alive. Chasing zero contrast gets you a dull stone.

Protecting the point

The point is where the pavilion comes to an edge. It is thin, it takes the brunt of a knock against a door frame, and a chip there is not polishable out without recutting the whole stone. Protect it and a pear is no more fragile than anything else. Ignore it and you will eventually pay for it.

Setting options, in order of how well they protect

  1. V-prong (or chevron prong). A prong shaped like a V that wraps the tip from both sides. This is the default recommendation and what we set most pears in. It covers the vulnerable angle without eating into the outline.
  2. Bezel or partial bezel. Metal fully around the point or around the whole stone. The most protective option by a clear margin. It does shorten the apparent length slightly and softens the tip.
  3. Two standard prongs at the tip. Common, adequate on a stout ratio, and not enough on a 1.70+ stone where the tip is genuinely thin.
  4. A single prong on the point. Looks clean in photos. Leaves the two flanks of the tip exposed. We do not recommend it.

Orientation

Point toward the fingertip is the standard and it lengthens the finger. Point toward the wrist is a real choice some people prefer, and it puts the tip further from where your hand strikes things, which is a modest practical gain. East-west pears sit sideways and turn the shape into something closer to a sculptural object than a classic solitaire.

Colour and clarity: where a pear differs from a round

Two things change with a pear compared to a round, and both cost you money if you ignore them.

Colour concentrates at the point. Body colour pools in the tip of a pear the way it pools in the corners of a marquise. A J colour round can look white face-up; a J colour pear often shows a warm tip. In white gold or platinum, stop at H, and go G if the budget allows. In yellow or rose gold the metal warms the whole stone anyway, so J or K is fine and you are wasting money above I.

Inclusions near the tip matter more. A feather in the point is a structural concern, not just a visual one, because that is the area under stress when the stone is set and when it takes a knock. An SI1 with clean tips and its inclusions out near the shoulders is a better buy than a VS2 with a feather running into the point. Read the plot on the report, not just the grade letter.

What a pear actually costs in CAD

Prices move with the market, so treat these as ranges for a well-cut stone with a decent ratio, not quotes. Natural pears, G-H colour, VS2-SI1:

  • 0.70-0.90ct: roughly $2,000-$3,800
  • 1.00-1.20ct: roughly $4,500-$8,000
  • 1.50-1.75ct: roughly $9,000-$16,000
  • 2.00ct+: $16,000 and up, with a steep jump at exactly 2.00

Lab-grown pears in the same specs run a fraction of those figures and the gap widens as size goes up. Settings add roughly $900-$2,600 depending on metal and whether you want pavé.

Two honest notes on spend. First, buy just under the round carat marks. A 1.90ct pear and a 2.00ct pear are indistinguishable on a hand and the price difference is not. Second, do not pay for D-E colour in a pear unless you are also buying a high clarity grade and setting it in platinum, because the point will show warmth long before the rest of the stone does and the premium goes to waste.

Wedding bands and the point problem

A pear does not sit flat against a straight band. The tip either overhangs the band or leaves a visible gap, depending on the setting height. Your options are a contoured band cut to follow the outline, an open or split band that sits either side of the point, or a straight band worn with a deliberate gap, which some people like and some find untidy. Decide this before the setting is finalised, because a contoured band has to be shaped to your specific ring.

What to do next

  1. Settle on a ratio. Look at pears at 1.45, 1.55 and 1.65 and pick the outline you actually like.
  2. Filter the loose diamond search to that ratio, then compare videos for the bow-tie and check the plot for anything near the tip.
  3. Pair it with a V-prong or bezel setting from the engagement ring settings and preview the pairing in 3D.
  4. Finish the ring with metal, size and engraving, and raise the band question then, while it is still easy to change.

If you are torn between two stones and the videos are not settling it, the deciding factor is almost always the tip: clean tip, protected tip, and a ratio you chose on purpose.
