Moissanite vs Diamond Tennis Bracelet: Honest Take
Moissanite vs diamond tennis bracelet, compared honestly: what 40-odd stones cost in CAD, where the difference shows on the wrist, and when to save.
On a tennis bracelet, moissanite saves you far less than it does on an engagement ring. The stones in a bracelet are tiny, and tiny lab-grown diamonds are already cheap, so most of what you pay for either version is gold and the bench time to set forty-odd stones. The choice comes down to durability, how the light behaves across a row of small stones, and whether you want an item with resale value or an item that looks good and costs little.
The two stones are not related
A diamond is carbon. The US Federal Trade Commission's Jewelry Guides define a diamond in 16 CFR 23.12 as "a mineral consisting essentially of pure carbon crystallized in the isometric system," with a hardness of 10, a specific gravity of approximately 3.52 and a refractive index of 2.42. Moissanite is silicon carbide. GIA lists it among the diamond simulants, noting that "common simulants are often created with glass, moissanite and cubic zirconia (CZ)" (GIA, Simulants, Moissanite and Lab-Grown Diamonds).
That distinction matters for what a seller is allowed to call the bracelet. A lab-grown diamond is a diamond; moissanite is not, and no qualifying word makes it one. GIA puts the line plainly: "Lab-grown diamonds have the same chemical, physical and optical properties as natural diamonds, while simulants do not" (GIA, What Are Simulated Diamonds?). The FTC guides say the same thing in enforcement language at 16 CFR 23.25(c): "It is unfair or deceptive to use the word 'laboratory-grown,' 'laboratory-created,' 'synthetic,' or other word or phrase of like meaning with the name of any natural stone to describe any industry product unless such product has essentially the same optical, physical, and chemical properties as the stone named."
So "lab-grown diamond tennis bracelet" and "moissanite tennis bracelet" describe two different products. If a listing blurs those two phrases together, that is the first thing to ask about.
What each one costs in Canada
Here is the part people get wrong. On a solitaire, the stone is most of the price, so switching to moissanite changes the total. On a tennis bracelet, the stone budget is split across roughly 40 to 50 small stones, and small lab-grown diamonds have become inexpensive enough that the gold and the labour dominate.
These are the bands we see in the Canadian market as of September 2026 for a 7-inch, four-prong bracelet in 14K gold, near-colourless goods in the SI clarity range, before tax. They are our own observation, not a published index, and they move.

At 1.00 ct total, the moissanite bracelet and the lab-grown diamond bracelet cost close to the same, because both are mostly a gold bracelet with a lot of settings in it. Paying a few hundred dollars more to have actual diamonds in a piece you will wear for twenty years is, in our view, the easy call at that size. The moissanite argument only gets strong at 5 ct and above, where the saving is thousands and the alternative is not buying the bracelet at all.
One more pricing quirk: moissanite is normally sold by millimetre size and quoted in "diamond equivalent weight," meaning the carat weight a diamond of that diameter would have. A "3 carat" moissanite bracelet and a 3.00 ct diamond bracelet look the same on the wrist but do not weigh the same. Compare millimetres per stone, not headline carats.
What actually shows on the wrist
At bracelet scale, less than most people assume. A 3.00 ct bracelet split 45 ways is about 2.6 mm per stone. Very little is legible at that size, in either direction.
- Fire. GIA reports that "moissanite has more than twice the fire of diamond and slightly more brilliance" (GIA, An Introduction to Imitation Diamonds & Other Gems). In a solitaire that extra dispersion can read as artificial. Across 45 small stones it mostly reads as a livelier, more rainbow-heavy flash. Some people prefer it.
- Doubling. GIA notes moissanite "is doubly refractive, so viewers will see a double image of its back facets," which can make the inside of a stone look blurry. That is a real tell in a 6.5 mm centre stone. At 2.6 mm it is not something you will see across a dinner table.
- Colour cast. GIA also observes that "some moissanites look slightly yellow or gray when viewed at certain angles." On a bracelet, an off-colour cast is more forgivable than in a solitaire because the eye is reading a row, not one stone.
- Diamond colour. For the diamond version, GIA's scale "goes from D for colorless to Z for light yellow, light brown, or light gray" (GIA, Diamond Colour). Melee is bought as parcels within a colour range, not graded stone by stone, so consistency across the row matters more than the letter on the invoice.
- Diamond clarity. GIA defines VS as inclusions "observed with effort but can be characterized as minor" and SI as inclusions that are "noticeable" (GIA, Diamond Clarity). Those definitions are written for 10x magnification of a loose stone. In 2.6 mm melee, SI goods look clean to the eye, and paying up for VS across 45 stones buys you very little you can see.
Honest summary: at typical bracelet sizes, a stranger cannot tell the two apart in normal light, and neither can most jewellers without a tester. Anyone claiming otherwise is selling something.
Durability over years of wear
This is where the difference is real, because a bracelet takes far more abuse than a ring. Desks, door handles, steering wheels, gym equipment.
Moissanite is hard. GIA gives it "a hardness of 9.25 on the Moh's scale, which makes it very hard and durable, although not as hard as diamond." That is genuinely durable, and well above the point where a stone abrades in ordinary wear. But the Mohs scale is ordinal, not linear, and the gap between 9.25 and 10 is wider than the numbers suggest. Over a decade of daily wear on a wrist, diamond melee keeps its polish and crisp facet junctions better.
The more common failure on any tennis bracelet has nothing to do with the stone. Prongs wear thin, a link stretches, a clasp works loose. That risk is identical for both versions, and it is why the clasp and the hinge quality deserve more of your attention than the stone debate does. Metal and marking, in Canadian terms
Whichever stone you pick, the metal is a large share of the price, and Canadian rules on how it is marked are specific. Under the Precious Metals Marking Regulations (C.R.C., c. 1303), a platinum quality mark requires "95 per cent or more of the metallic content of the article or part," and section 13(1) sets the gold tolerance: the actual quality "shall not be less than the represented quality by more than seven parts by weight in every 1,000 parts where solder is used" or "three parts by weight in every 1,000 parts where no solder is used."
The Competition Bureau's Guide to the Precious Metals Marking Act and Regulations adds two useful facts. First, "it is not mandatory to mark or advertise a precious metal article for quality," so an unmarked bracelet is not automatically suspect. Second, if a quality mark is applied, "it must also bear a trade-mark that has either been applied for or registered with the Registrar of Trade-marks in Canada." A karat stamp with no maker's mark beside it is the thing to question.
A note on value: a diamond bracelet can be insured and appraised on a resale basis; a moissanite bracelet is generally insured for replacement cost, which is low. Neither is an investment. But if you expect to pass the piece on, that difference is worth weighing.
How to decide
- Set the total budget, including tax, before you look at stones.
- Decide the length and the look you want, then price that specification in 14K with lab-grown diamonds. That is your baseline.
- If the lab-grown number is within a few hundred dollars, buy the diamonds. At 1 to 3 ct total, it usually is.
- If you want a 5 ct or larger look and the diamond version is out of reach, moissanite is a sensible, honest choice. Buy it as moissanite, not as a "diamond alternative" with vague wording.
- Spend whatever you saved on the clasp, the hinge and a proper safety catch. That is what determines whether the bracelet survives.
