Princess Cut Tennis Bracelet: Building a Gapless Line

A princess cut tennis bracelet tiles edge to edge with no gaps. What that costs, why the corners are the weak point, and how to match 50-plus squares.

A princess cut tennis bracelet is a line of square diamonds set so their flat edges meet, which is the one thing a round brilliant physically cannot do. You get a continuous ribbon of diamond with almost no metal showing between stones, and at the same colour and clarity the squares usually price lower per carat than rounds. The catch is the corners. A princess cut has four sharp points, and a bracelet is the piece of jewellery most likely to meet a door frame.

Squares tile, circles do not

Set two round diamonds side by side and there are four curved gaps around every contact point. Metal fills them. That is why a round tennis bracelet reads as diamond, metal, diamond, metal, and why it sparkles in separate points. Squares butt up flat, so a well-built princess line reads as one strip.

That geometry also sets the carat weight, and this surprises people. A 7 inch bracelet is 177.8 mm long; a clasp takes roughly 12 to 15 mm of that, leaving about 163 mm to fill with stones. If each princess measures 2.8 mm across, you need about 58 of them. At roughly 0.11 ct each, that is a bracelet of around 6.4 carats total. Do the same arithmetic with 3.2 mm stones and you land near 51 stones and about 7.5 carats.

So a genuinely gapless princess line on an average wrist is a 5 to 8 carat piece, not a 3 carat one. If someone offers you a 3 carat princess bracelet, the stones are either much smaller than you are picturing, or there is visible metal between them and the tiling effect is gone. Neither is wrong, but you should know which one you are buying before you compare two quotes.

The price advantage is real and it comes from the rough. Diamond crystals commonly form as octahedra, and a square outline can be sawn from that shape with far less waste than a round brilliant, which has to be ground down to a circle. Less waste per finished carat, lower price per carat. You are not getting a lesser stone, you are getting a more efficient shape.

The corner problem

Diamond is the hardest material used in jewellery, but hardness and toughness are different properties. The US Federal Trade Commission's Jewelry Guides define a diamond as "a mineral consisting essentially of pure carbon crystallized in the isometric system" (FTC Jewelry Guides, 16 CFR Part 23). That crystal structure has preferred planes along which the material splits cleanly, which is exactly how cutters break rough in the first place. A sharp, unsupported corner sitting proud of its setting is a stress concentrator on a material that cleaves.

On a ring this is manageable, because your hand withdraws from an impact. A wrist swings into things. If you want one thing to inspect on a princess bracelet before you buy it, make it the corners: are they covered, or are they hanging out in the open?

Invisible setting is the one place I would push back hardest on a customer. It gives the purest unbroken surface of diamond of any construction, and it does it by cutting grooves into each stone's girdle so a metal frame can grip from underneath. When a stone comes loose, and eventually one will, you are not replacing a generic melee diamond, you are matching a grooved stone of a specific size to a proprietary frame. The look is genuinely the best available. The ownership cost is genuinely the worst.

Depth, spread and the weight you cannot see

Princess cuts are usually cut deep relative to their face-up outline, because keeping depth is how the cutter keeps weight from the octahedral rough. The practical result is that a princess carries more of its carat weight below the girdle than a round of the same weight does, so it can look slightly smaller face up than the number on the invoice suggests.

As a working guide for square princess cuts, and it does shift with depth:

  • About 0.10 ct sits near 2.6 to 2.8 mm across
  • About 0.15 ct sits near 3.0 to 3.2 mm
  • About 0.25 ct sits near 3.6 to 3.8 mm

Measure across the flat sides, not corner to corner. Corner to corner is roughly 1.4 times the side length and it is how an optimistic seller makes a stone sound larger. When you are comparing loose stones in our diamond search, the millimetre measurements matter more than the weight for a bracelet, because millimetres are what determine whether the line closes with no gaps.

Matching fifty squares

Nobody grades a row. Every certificate you receive describes one stone in isolation, and the thing you will actually look at is the agreement between them. HRD Antwerp's own description of clarity is that the scale "reflects the size, number and location of these characteristics when examined with a 10x loupe", with Loupe Clean meaning "no inclusions can be found when examining the diamond with a loupe" (HRD Antwerp, The 4Cs). Note the magnification. At 2.8 mm per stone, an inclusion that a grader needs 10x to find is not something you or anyone standing near you will ever see.

That gives you a clear place to save money and a clear place not to.

  1. Set your clarity floor at SI1 and stop. Paying up to VVS across sixty stones this size buys you nothing your eye can resolve. Spend the difference on matching instead.
  2. Buy colour as a matched set, not as a grade. A row that is uniformly H looks deliberate. A row that wanders from F to I looks like a mistake, and it costs more than the uniform H did.
  3. Ask whether the stones were bought as one parcel. Melee assembled from three suppliers over three months will not agree on colour, on depth, or on how square the squares are.
  4. Check the corner alignment along the row, unset if possible. Princess cuts vary slightly in length-to-width ratio, and a stone at 1.04:1 sitting between two at 1.00:1 puts a visible kink in a line that is supposed to be straight.
  5. Confirm every report came from the same laboratory. Grading is a trained human judgement, not a measurement, and labs are not perfectly interchangeable. A line mixing reports from three labs can be internally inconsistent even when all three certificates are honest.

Point 5 is the part the trade is least comfortable saying out loud. There is no instrument that outputs a colour grade. Two competent graders at different labs can land a stone on either side of a boundary, and across sixty stones those disagreements compound.

The mark on the clasp

Metal marking in Canada is law, not decoration. Under the Precious Metals Marking Act, a quality mark may only be applied if it "truly and correctly indicates the quality of the precious metal", and a dealer applying one must also apply an authorized registered trademark. The Act defines precious metal as "gold, palladium, platinum and silver and an alloy of any of those metals" plus anything the regulations designate.

The Precious Metals Marking Regulations then set out how gold may be described: karats may be shown as "karat", "carat", "Karat", "Carat", "Kt.", "Ct.", "K" or "C", with a minimum standard of 9 karats. Read that list again, because it creates a trap specific to jewellery like this. On the clasp, "Ct." means karat, a measure of gold purity. On the invoice, "ct" means carat, a measure of diamond weight. Same abbreviation, entirely different quantity. If a listing says "18 Ct" you should know which one is meant, and a legitimate mark will be accompanied by a maker's trademark.

For a bracelet specifically, 14k is the more sensible choice than 18k. The clasp and the link hinges are the parts that fail, and the harder alloy holds a hinge better under the constant flexing a wrist gives it. That same reasoning applies when you finish a ring in metal and size, though a ring is under far less repeated stress than a bracelet.

Natural, lab-grown, and what moves the price

Terminology here is regulated, and the regulator is worth quoting. The FTC Jewelry Guides permit the word "cultured" for laboratory-created diamonds only where it is "qualified by a clear and conspicuous disclosure (for example, the words 'laboratory-created,' 'laboratory-grown,' '[manufacturer name]-created,' or some other word or phrase of like meaning) conveying that the product is not a mined stone". Those Guides are US rules and do not bind a Canadian seller directly, but they are the source of the vocabulary the whole trade now uses. A seller who says "cultured" and stops has told you nothing.

On origin, the Kimberley Process describes itself as "an international initiative and intergovernmental forum to exclude conflict diamonds from the legitimate trade", defining conflict diamonds as "rough diamonds used by rebel movements or their allies to finance conflict aimed at undermining legitimate governments". Read the word rough. The scheme certifies shipments of rough diamonds between participant countries; it is not a chain of custody for the individual cut melee in your bracelet. Anyone implying otherwise is overselling it.

I am not going to print a fixed Canadian dollar price, because two of the three inputs move weekly. Melee is traded internationally in US dollars, and the Bank of Canada published an indicative rate of 1.3866 Canadian dollars per US dollar on 31 August 2026, noting that all its rates are "indicative rates only, obtained from averages of aggregated price quotes from financial institutions" (Bank of Canada, Daily exchange rates). Gold is quoted in US dollars too. A three per cent move in either one moves a sixty stone bracelet quote by real money, and lab-grown melee prices have kept falling faster than anything I could usefully write down here. Price the stones and the metal on the day you order.

What to do next

Decide the look first, because it sets everything else. If you want the unbroken ribbon, budget for 5 to 8 carats and choose channel or four-prong construction; if the total weight is the constraint, accept visible metal between stones and stop paying for a tiling effect you are not getting. Then set clarity at SI1, buy colour matched rather than high, and specify 14k for the clasp.
