How Long Does a Custom Engagement Ring Take to Make?

How long does a custom engagement ring take to make? A stage-by-stage look at CAD, casting, setting and marking, and which steps you can actually shorten.

A custom engagement ring takes roughly two to six weeks from order to finished piece, but the actual hands-on work inside that window is closer to two or three days. Casting takes an afternoon. Setting a centre stone takes an hour or two in skilled hands. Everything else is queueing, curing, shipping and checking, and that is where your calendar really goes.

This guide walks through the making itself, stage by stage, so you can see which steps have a hard physical floor and which are just waiting. If you want the countdown-from-your-proposal-date version instead, that is covered separately in the other guides.

What "custom" means for the schedule

Two very different jobs get sold under the same word.

The common one is configuring a ring: you pick an existing setting design, choose the metal and finger size, choose a loose diamond, and the workshop builds that specific combination for you. Nothing is invented, but nothing exists yet either. The mount is cast to your size and the head is set for your stone's footprint.

The rarer one is a design that starts from a sketch or a conversation. That version adds CAD drafting and approval rounds before any metal is poured, and those rounds are the single biggest variable in the whole process because they run at the speed of your replies, not the workshop's.

Most orders are the first kind. The stages below are written for that path, with notes where a bespoke design changes things.

Stage by stage, and what each one costs in days

  1. Order lock. Metal, karatage, finger size, centre stone, engraving. Nothing physical starts until all five are fixed, because each one changes the mould or the head. Half a day if you are ready, a week if you are still deciding.
  2. CAD and resin print (bespoke only). Drafting is a day or two. Each revision round is another two to four days, mostly waiting on approval. Then a resin model is printed and checked on a finger for proportion, which is worth doing and adds about a day.
  3. Casting. The wax or resin pattern is attached to a tree, invested in plaster, burned out in a kiln, and the metal is poured. The burnout cycle alone runs several hours and cannot be rushed without cracking the investment. In practice a workshop casts on set days, so your job waits for the next pour. Call it one to five days depending on where in the week you land.
  4. Pre-finishing. Sprues cut off, the mount filed, seams cleaned, the inside of the shank trued to size. This is where a rough casting becomes a ring, and it is slow, quiet, unglamorous work. One to two days.
  5. Stone setting. Accent stones first, centre stone last. A pavé band with forty small diamonds is a longer job than a plain solitaire by a wide margin. One to three days, plus queue time if your setter is booked.
  6. Final polish and plating. White gold is usually rhodium plated at this point. Platinum is not plated, it is polished. Half a day.
  7. Marking and inspection. The quality mark and trademark are stamped, the ring is cleaned, and it goes under a loupe for a final check. Half a day.

Add those up and the honest bench total for a configured ring is three to eight working days. The reason the quoted lead time is longer is that these stages sit in different people's queues, and the diamond has to physically arrive before step five can happen.

The clocks running outside the workshop

Three things move in parallel with the metal work, and any one of them can become the binding constraint.

The stone in transit. A loose diamond has to reach the bench and be inspected before it is set. If it is already in local inventory that is a day. If it is coming from a cutting centre it is a week or more.

Currency, if the stone is priced in USD. Loose diamonds are largely traded in US dollars, so a CAD quote is a snapshot. As of 2 September 2026, the Bank of Canada published a daily rate of 1.3863 Canadian dollars per US dollar. A quote held open for three weeks while you decide is exposed to that rate, which is a good practical argument for deciding sooner rather than negotiating longer.

Grading paperwork. If a stone already carries a report, this clock does not run at all. If it needs one, or needs a report re-issued after a recut, you are on the lab's schedule. As of September 2026, GIA's return dates page does not publish a single flat turnaround; it calculates an estimated return date from stone type, weight, submission date and laboratory location, and notes that requesting additional services after results may lengthen the return time. GIA's Diamond Grading Report service page lists a 24-hour option and laser inscription among its add-on services, so parts of that clock can be bought down, but only for work that has not started.

One paperwork change worth knowing about

If you are looking at lab-grown, the reports themselves have shifted. GIA announced that from 1 October 2025 its laboratory-grown diamond service assigns one of two descriptive categories, "Premium" or "Standard", rather than the colour and clarity grades used for natural stones, on the stated reasoning that GIA "will no longer use the nomenclature created for natural diamonds to describe what is a manufactured product." Stones with older GIA lab-grown reports are still in circulation, and not every laboratory has made the same change. That is a genuine disagreement between labs, not something settled, so read the report in front of you rather than assuming what its scale means.

Whichever you choose, the description has to be accurate. FTC guidance in In the Loupe says a laboratory-grown stone must be described with wording such as "laboratory-grown", "laboratory-created" or "[manufacturer name]-created" placed "immediately preceding the word 'diamond' and equally conspicuously". None of this adds days, but it tells you what a straight description looks like.

The stamping step nobody expects

The mark inside the shank is not decoration. Under Canada's Precious Metals Marking Act, section 4(3), where a quality mark is applied, a mark that is a registered trademark under the Trademarks Act "shall be applied to the article", and section 5 of the Precious Metals Marking Regulations requires that trademark to be applied "by the same method as the quality mark". Section 6 of those regulations sets the standards behind the numbers: a gold quality mark requires at least 9 karats, and a platinum mark requires platinum at 95 per cent or more of the metallic content.

The regulations also allow for the fact that rings get worked on. Section 13 permits actual gold quality to fall short of the marked quality by up to three parts per thousand where no solder is used, and up to seven parts where solder is used, with fifteen parts allowed for white gold of 18 karats or more. That tolerance exists because sizing a ring means introducing solder, which is worth knowing if you are tempted to delay an order over an uncertain finger size. Resizing later is normal and legally accounted for.

Where estimates go wrong

  • Changing the centre stone after casting. Heads are cut for a specific footprint. Moving from a 1.00 ct round to a 1.30 ct oval usually means recasting, which restarts stages three through seven.
  • An unusual finger size. Very small or very large shanks need more metal and more truing, and a wide band in an odd size sometimes needs a fresh wax.
  • Heavy pavé. Forty stones set by hand is not the same job as one stone, and it is the stage least amenable to hurrying. Rushed setting shows up as uneven prongs within a year.
  • Deciding on engraving late. It happens after polish. Adding it after the ring is finished means undoing the last stage.
  • A stone that fails visual inspection. Reports describe a diamond well but not completely. If it looks wrong on the bench, replacing it costs about a week, and that week is worth spending.

What is not worth paying for

Rush fees on a bespoke design are usually wasted, because the weeks are in your approval rounds, not the bench. Expediting the setting while the diamond is the slow half buys nothing. And choosing a rarer specification purely to feel like you optimised the build tends to lengthen sourcing without changing what anyone sees on the hand. If a good stone in your shape and size is available now, take it.

What to do next

Work from the setting outward, because it defines both the stone footprint and the longest queue. Shortlist two designs from the engagement ring settings, then search loose diamonds filtered to the shapes and sizes those settings accept, and preview each pairing in 3D before committing. When you are settled, complete the ring with metal, size and engraving in one go, so the order locks on day one instead of drifting.
