What Is a Tennis Bracelet? Anatomy, Fit and Cost

What is a tennis bracelet? A flexible line of matched diamonds set end to end. How the setting style, clasp, stone quality and metal decide what you pay.

A tennis bracelet is a flexible line of small diamonds of matched size and quality, set one after another around the whole wrist and closed with a clasp. There is no centre stone and no front, which is the point: it reads as a continuous line of light rather than as a piece with a focal point. The name describes a format, not a quality standard, so two bracelets sold under the same words can contain very different amounts of diamond and very different construction.

Where the name comes from

The format is older than the name. In the trade it was sold as a line bracelet or an eternity bracelet, and both terms still turn up on supplier invoices today.

The story usually told is that the name came from Chris Evert. National Jeweler, writing about Evert's later collaboration with designer Monica Rich Kosann, places it in an early round of the 1978 U.S. Open: Evert, then 23, was wearing a diamond line bracelet she had bought for herself, it came off during play, and the match was halted until she found it (Michelle Graff, National Jeweler, 17 August 2022). Evert is quoted there saying, "When I competed, I wanted to wear something that gave me confidence and empowered me, both as a woman and an athlete."

Treat the specifics as trade lore rather than documented history. Retellings differ on the year and on whether the clasp broke or the bracelet simply slipped. What is not in dispute is that the name stuck and became the standard retail term.

What is actually inside one

A tennis bracelet is typically 30 to 60 stones joined by small hinged links, with a clasp taking up 10 to 15 mm of the length. The individual stones are melee, the trade word for the small diamonds used in quantity rather than as a centrepiece.

The arithmetic is worth doing before you shop, because total carat weight is the number everyone quotes and it hides two very different bracelets. A 3.00 ct bracelet built from 45 stones averages about 0.067 ct each, roughly 2.6 mm across in a round brilliant. The same 3.00 ct spread across 70 stones is about 0.043 ct each, closer to 2.2 mm. Same headline number, noticeably different line on the wrist, and the version with fewer larger stones costs more because larger melee costs more per carat.

If you wear a bracelet daily and put your hands through sleeves, bags and car doors, shared prong or channel will give you fewer trips to a bench jeweller than individual four-prong heads. That is the practical trade for a small amount of sparkle.

The diamonds are graded, but not the way a centre stone is

This is the part that catches people out. A loose centre stone comes with its own report from a laboratory, listing cut, colour, clarity and carat for that individual stone. That is how our loose diamond search works: one stone, one report, one set of measurements you can check.

Melee is almost never individually certified. It is bought and sold in parcels, and the colour and clarity you see quoted for a bracelet is a range assigned by the manufacturer or the setter, not a grade issued by GIA, IGI or HRD for each stone. That is normal practice, not a scam, but it means the numbers describe a parcel rather than deliver an independent verdict, and two suppliers can label comparable goods differently.

The vocabulary is still the labs'. GIA describes clarity as referring to "the absence of these inclusions and blemishes", on a scale that "ranges from flawless (FL) to diamonds with large inclusions and surface faults (I3)", and notes that "most diamonds fall into the VS (very slightly included) or SI (slightly included) categories" (GIA, About the 4Cs: Clarity). On colour, GIA states that "diamonds are valued by how closely they approach colorlessness" and, importantly for a bracelet, that "many of these color distinctions are so subtle as to be invisible to the untrained eye" (GIA, About the 4Cs: Color).

Where paying more stops showing

At 2 to 3 mm per stone, several of the grades you can pay a premium for are invisible in ordinary wear:

  • VVS clarity in melee is money spent on something nobody will see, including you with the bracelet on your own wrist. Eye-clean is the standard that matters.
  • SI-grade melee is genuinely fine here. What to reject is a stone with a dark inclusion visible straight on in daylight, which does show as a dead spot in the line.
  • G to H colour set in yellow or rose gold is indistinguishable from F once it is on the wrist.
  • Consistency beats grade. A line where one stone sits visibly warmer or darker than its neighbours looks worse than a uniformly lower-graded bracelet.
  • Cut quality still matters, even at this size. Poorly proportioned melee goes flat and grey in low light regardless of its stated colour.

Metal, karat stamps and what the marking means in Canada

Canada regulates what a quality mark can claim. Under the Precious Metals Marking Act, a quality mark may be applied only if it "truly and correctly indicates the quality of the precious metal", and where one is applied, a registered trademark "shall be applied to the article" as well. A karat stamp with no maker's mark next to it is not a properly marked piece.

The Competition Bureau sets out the thresholds. Gold items "must have a minimum quality of 9K and a maximum quality of 24K" to carry a quality mark, with decimal equivalents including .416 for 10K, .583 for 14K and .750 for 18K; silver "must have a minimum quality of .925"; and platinum must be "at least 95% platinum" or a qualifying alloy (Competition Bureau Canada, Detailed requirements for marking of precious metals, modified 19 January 2022).

For a bracelet, 14K is the sensible default. It is harder than 18K, which matters for a piece that knocks against desks and door handles, and it carries less gold cost. Platinum is the expensive option that is not worth it here: it is denser, so the same design gets heavier and dearer, and against 14K white gold the visual difference on a wrist is nil. I would not quote you a metal price in this post, because gold moves daily and any figure written in August 2026 will be wrong when you read it. Ask for the current quote on the exact specification.

Length, drape and the clasp

The clasp deserves more attention than the diamond grades, since it is the only part whose failure loses the whole piece. Work through these in order:

  1. Measure your wrist snugly with a strip of paper, at the spot where the bracelet will actually sit.
  2. Add roughly 1.25 to 2 cm. Less and it binds, more and the bracelet rolls so the stones face sideways, which is the most common complaint about an otherwise good piece.
  3. Ask whether links can be removed, and by how much. Some designs adjust in 6 mm steps, some not at all.
  4. Insist on a box clasp with a figure-eight safety catch or a double-tab underfold, not a plain lobster on a piece worth thousands.
  5. Ask whether the safety catch is soldered on, not just sprung into place.
  6. Ask for the gross weight in grams. It tells you how substantial the piece is and how it will feel after a full day.

Natural, lab-grown, or neither

The stones in a tennis bracelet can be natural, laboratory-grown, or a simulant such as cubic zirconia or moissanite, which is not diamond at all. The terminology is regulated. Under the FTC Jewelry Guides, a diamond is "a mineral consisting essentially of pure carbon crystallized in the isometric system", and it is "unfair or deceptive to use the unqualified word 'diamond'" for something that does not meet that definition. Laboratory-grown stones must be qualified with "a clear and conspicuous disclosure (for example, the words 'laboratory-created,' 'laboratory-grown,' '[manufacturer name]-created,' or some other word or phrase of like meaning)" conveying that the product is not mined (FTC Guides for the Jewelry, Precious Metals, and Pewter Industries, 16 CFR Part 23, § 23.12, 2023 CFR edition).

In plain terms: if a listing says "diamond bracelet" with no qualifier, it should be diamond. If it says lab-grown, that is a diamond too, grown rather than mined. If it says "diamond simulant", it is neither. Lab-grown melee has become substantially cheaper than natural melee, but the size of that gap moves month to month and I will not quote a percentage that will be stale. Compare current prices for the same specification, in writing, on the day you buy.

What to do next

Decide total carat weight first, since it sets your budget, then choose stone count and setting style for how you actually live, then pick the lowest quality range that still looks clean and consistent. Get the clasp specification in writing before you pay, and ask for the gross weight and the stated colour and clarity range on the invoice so you have something an insurer can work from.
