How Long Does a Custom Wedding Ring Take? Week by Week
How long does a custom wedding ring take? Stage-by-stage timelines for plain, fitted and eternity bands, plus how to plan back from your date.
Most custom wedding rings take three to six weeks from approved design to finished ring. A plain band in a standard width moves faster than that, while a fitted band shaped to sit flush against an existing engagement ring, or a full eternity band with twenty matched stones, can run eight to twelve weeks. The variable that matters most is not the workshop, it is when you start: give yourself about three months before the wedding and the timeline stops being a source of stress.
Note that a wedding band is a different job from an engagement ring, even though the two get discussed together. An engagement ring is usually one stone and one design decision. A wedding band often has to match something that already exists, and it has a fixed date attached to it.
The short answer, by ring type
These are typical bench times for the making of the ring itself. They do not include transit, and they assume the design is settled before work starts.

If someone quotes you a full eternity band in ten days, they are almost certainly pulling a finished ring off a shelf and calling it custom. That is fine if it fits, but it is not the same product.
Where the weeks actually go
- Design and approval, a few days to two weeks. This is the stage most couples underestimate, and it is the one entirely within your control. Two people have to agree on width, profile, metal and finish.
- CAD and 3D preview, one to three days per round. Each revision resets a short clock. Two rounds is normal, five is a schedule problem.
- Stone selection, a few days to two weeks. A single accent stone is quick. Twenty matched stones is a sourcing exercise.
- Casting or fabrication, three to seven days. Casting runs are batched, so a design that misses Tuesday's pour waits for Thursday's.
- Setting, one to five days. A plain band skips this. A pavé band is measured in hours per section.
- Finishing and plating, one to three days. White gold gets rhodium plated. Platinum gets a longer polish because it moves differently under the wheel.
- Marking and quality control, one to two days. Small step, real time.
- Final fit check and sizing, variable. If the finger measurement was taken on a cold January morning, this is where you find out.
That marking step in position seven is worth understanding, because it is genuinely regulated. Under Canada's Precious Metals Marking Act (RSC 1985, c. P-19, last amended 21 June 2019), a quality mark is defined as "a mark indicating or purporting to indicate the quality, quantity, fineness, weight, thickness, proportion or kind of precious metal in an article." The Competition Bureau's Guide to the Precious Metals Marking Act and Regulations, read in September 2026, is direct about the choice involved: "It is not mandatory to mark or advertise a precious metal article for quality." But if a maker does apply one, the Bureau's guide states that "where a quality mark is applied to a precious metal article it must also bear a trade-mark." So an unmarked band is not automatically suspect in Canada, and a marked one carries two stamps rather than one.
What makes one band take three weeks and another ten
Matching a ring that already exists
This is the single biggest timeline multiplier. A band that has to sit flush against a solitaire cannot be designed from a drawing. The bench needs the actual engagement ring, or an extremely accurate scan of it, then cuts a wax or resin fit check and tests it against the real thing. If the first fit is off by a fraction of a millimetre, you do it again. Budget two fitting rounds and be pleasantly surprised if one is enough.
If you are ordering both rings together, this problem largely disappears. Designing the band alongside the setting from the start is faster and produces a better fit than retrofitting later. Stone count and stone matching
A three-stone band is a sourcing question of hours. A full eternity band is a sourcing question of weeks, because the stones must agree with each other, not just meet a spec.
Colour is the trap. GIA's diamond colour guidance describes the normal range as running "from D for colorless to Z for light yellow, light brown, or light gray," and it is explicit about method: "the correct way to evaluate diamond color is in precise conditions, under controlled lighting, where stones are compared to masterstones with established color grades." That is a laboratory procedure with controlled light and reference stones. Your ring finger is not that environment.
Here is the honest version. In stones under about 2mm, a one or two grade colour difference is not something anyone will see on your hand, in daylight, ever. What people do notice is a band where the stones disagree with each other, one warmer patch among cooler neighbours. So the money and the waiting are better spent on consistency across the row than on chasing D through F for melee. Paying a premium for near-colourless melee in a half eternity band is, in my view, one of the least useful upgrades in the trade.
Shape matters for scheduling too. GIA describes cut as how a diamond "interacts with light" and grades it Excellent through Poor, but that grade scale applies to standard round brilliants (GIA, diamond cut). Fancy shapes do not carry an equivalent cut grade, which means a baguette or emerald cut eternity band has to be matched by eye and by measurement rather than by reading a number off a report. That takes longer, and it is why those bands sit at the top of the table above.
Metal, and one regulatory wrinkle
Platinum and gold behave differently at the bench, and platinum's finishing pass is genuinely slower. There is also a marking consequence. The Competition Bureau's guide sets the threshold for a platinum quality mark at articles containing "at least 95 percent platinum or for an alloy of platinum, at least 95 percent of platinum and iridium or ruthenium." For gold, the guide permits marks from 9K upward and allows decimal designations such as 14K (.583) and 18K (.750), with a tolerance of 7 parts per 1,000 by weight where solder is used. That tolerance is not trivia: it is why a band that gets sized with solder later still holds its mark honestly.
Working backwards from the wedding date
- Twelve weeks out: decide metal, width and whether you want stones. Measure both fingers properly, at the end of the day, at room temperature.
- Ten weeks out: approve the design and the 3D preview. This is your real deadline.
- Eight weeks out: stones confirmed and reserved.
- Four weeks out: ring finished, in your hands, and tried on.
- Two weeks out: any sizing adjustment done and back.
That last buffer is the one people cut, and it is the one that saves weddings. Rings are sized after the fact more often than anyone admits.
Where paying more buys speed, and where it does not
- Worth it: paying for a second wax fitting on a shaped band. It is the difference between a band that sits flat and one that rocks.
- Worth it: locking your stones early on an eternity band, before the row gets broken up for someone else's order.
- Usually not worth it: a rush fee on the casting stage. Casting is a small slice of the total, and paying to compress it buys you two or three days at most.
- Not worth it: upgrading melee colour or clarity to shorten a search. It rarely does, and the difference is invisible at that size.
- Genuinely not solvable with money: a full eternity band ordered six weeks before a wedding when the finger size is uncertain. Full eternity bands cannot be resized meaningfully. If the fit is wrong, you remake.
What to do next
Start with the finger measurement, because everything downstream depends on it. Then decide whether the band stands alone or has to match an existing ring, since that one answer moves your timeline by a month.
